A new era is approaching for Italian football as Inter Milan and AC Milan have unveiled plans for their new shared stadium, which will replace the iconic San Siro. The venue will be called Generali Stadium, following its naming partnership with Italian insurance company Generali.
The clubs officially presented the stadium design in Milan on October 29, 2026.
A 71,500-Seat Stadium
The new stadium is expected to have a capacity of approximately 71,500 spectators. Its design focuses on bringing fans closer to the pitch and creating an intense matchday atmosphere.
The stands behind the goals will have an incline of up to 37 degrees. The project has been designed by Foster + Partners and MANICA, featuring a distinctive X-frame exterior structure and a double-curved roof.
The roof and seating arrangement are intended to enhance the atmosphere by amplifying the sound of supporters inside the stadium.
Construction Expected to Begin in 2028
Construction is expected to begin in 2028, with the clubs targeting the first match during the 2031/32 season, subject to the necessary approvals.
The stadium project is estimated to cost around €1.2 billion. Inter and AC Milan previously paid €197 million to acquire the current San Siro stadium site and surrounding areas.
What Happens to San Siro?
Opened in 1926, San Siro has been one of the most iconic venues in Italian and European football. It has served as the home ground of both Inter and AC Milan for generations.
Under the new redevelopment plan, a large part of the existing stadium will eventually be demolished.
The new venue will also be designed to host American football, rugby matches and concerts. The wider development project includes public spaces, green areas, leisure facilities and retail destinations.
The unveiling marks a major step in the clubs’ plans to modernise their infrastructure while preserving the atmosphere and identity associated with San Siro.
