Morkel Warns India’s Bowlers: No More Excuses, Standards Must Improve

CricBengal.com | Cricket Desk

Despite taking a 2-0 lead in the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand, India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel believes his bowlers must raise their standards in the matches ahead. While defending the bowling unit, Morkel admitted that some decisions and execution at crucial stages could have been better.

India began the series with a successful chase of 226 in the opening T20I before securing a last-over victory while pursuing a target of 181 in the second match. However, Morkel wants the bowlers to learn from their mistakes and deliver more consistent performances.

According to Morkel, a score of around 180-190 was par at the previous venue, Christchurch. He felt India had failed to execute their plans effectively during certain phases of the first game, while some bowling options and decisions could have been wiser.

The bowling coach stressed that having a plan was not enough; the players needed to execute it properly on the field. He also highlighted the importance of trusting their instincts and reviewing their performances to identify areas for improvement.

‘From Now On, There Are No More Excuses’

Morkel acknowledged that travel fatigue, jet lag and limited training opportunities had affected the players during the early stages of the tour. However, he believes those factors can no longer be used as excuses.

The team has now had time to settle into the conditions, and the expectation is for the bowlers to improve their standards and get the small details right.

India will face New Zealand in the third T20I in Wellington on Tuesday. Morkel expects the windy conditions to present a different challenge, requiring players to adapt quickly.

He noted that strong winds could affect several aspects of the game, including a batter’s stance and balance at the crease. With limited time available for warm-ups and training, India’s players will need to understand the conditions quickly and focus on executing every delivery.

Morkel Backs Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Morkel also defended experienced seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has struggled to make an impact since returning to international cricket.

Bhuvneshwar has conceded 99 runs in eight overs across the first two matches, taking just one wicket. Despite those figures, Morkel believes the veteran bowler deserves time to rediscover his rhythm after a lengthy absence from international cricket.

The coach pointed out that performing well in the IPL and competing in international cricket are different challenges. Bhuvneshwar also had limited preparation time before joining the squad, making his return more demanding.

Morkel’s advice to the experienced seamer is to remain true to himself and avoid getting distracted by outside expectations.

He believes Bhuvneshwar can gradually regain his rhythm and improve with every game if he continues to trust his skills and experience.

With the series moving to Wellington, India will look to maintain their winning momentum while addressing the shortcomings in their bowling performance. The third T20I will provide another opportunity for Morkel’s bowlers to demonstrate the improvement he is demanding.
