Glenn Phillips produced a stunning century as New Zealand defeated India by 87 runs in the fourth T20I at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday, October 30. The victory was New Zealand’s first in the five-match series after India had won the opening three games.
India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl. Although New Zealand lost Tim Seifert and Daryl Mitchell early, the hosts recovered through aggressive batting from Finn Allen, Phillips and Michael Bracewell.
Phillips and Bracewell Lead New Zealand’s Batting Charge
Phillips dominated the Indian bowling attack with a remarkable 107 off just 49 deliveries. His innings featured six fours and 10 sixes, bringing him his third T20I century.
Michael Bracewell provided outstanding support, smashing 65 from only 25 balls. The pair added 115 runs for the fifth wicket in just 40 deliveries, turning the innings in New Zealand’s favour.
New Zealand eventually posted 259 for seven in their 20 overs, their highest-ever total in T20I cricket on home soil.
Duffy’s Early Strikes Derail India’s Chase
Chasing 260, India suffered an immediate setback as Jacob Duffy dismissed Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan in the opening over.
Abhishek Sharma scored 27 from 15 balls, while captain Shreyas Iyer made 22 from 11 deliveries. However, India continued to lose wickets at regular intervals.
Tilak Varma top-scored with 35, while Naman Dhir contributed a quickfire 28 from 13 balls. Their efforts were not enough to revive the chase as India finished on 172 for nine.
Duffy was New Zealand’s leading bowler, taking four wickets for 23 runs. Mitchell Santner also claimed two wickets.
India Still Lead the Series 3-1
Despite the heavy defeat, India remain in control of the five-match series with a 3-1 lead. The visitors had won the first three matches before New Zealand secured a consolation victory in Auckland.
The fifth and final T20I will be played in Hamilton on November 1.
