New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has created history by becoming his country’s most-capped player in men’s T20 Internationals. The left-arm spinner reached the milestone during the fifth and final T20I against India at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Sunday, making his 143rd appearance in the format.
Santner moved past fellow spinner Ish Sodhi, who previously held the record with 142 T20I appearances for New Zealand. The achievement marks another significant moment in a career that began in the shortest international format in 2015.
Santner Moves Ahead of Ish Sodhi
Santner made his T20I debut for New Zealand in 2015 and has remained an important part of the team’s setup for more than a decade.
His 143rd appearance against India took him past Sodhi’s previous record of 142 matches. Santner now stands alone at the top of New Zealand’s men’s T20I appearance list.
The record reflects his longevity and consistent contribution to the national side across different stages of his career.
New Zealand’s Most-Capped T20I Players
The top five players with the most men’s T20I appearances for New Zealand are:
| Player | T20I Matches |
|---|---|
| Mitchell Santner | 143 |
| Ish Sodhi | 142 |
| Tim Southee | 126 |
| Martin Guptill | 122 |
| Daryl Mitchell | 109 |
Santner’s achievement places him ahead of several established names in New Zealand cricket.
Santner’s Batting and Bowling Numbers
Across his 143 T20I appearances, Santner has scored 1,117 runs at an average of 20.30. His highest individual score is an unbeaten 77.
With the ball, he has claimed 151 wickets at an average of 23.09. His best bowling figures in the format are four wickets for 11 runs.
These numbers underline his value as an all-round contributor for New Zealand, particularly in the shortest international format.
Another Milestone: 150 T20I Wickets
Santner reached another career milestone during the fourth T20I against India. He took two wickets for 24 runs in that match, dismissing Axar Patel and Nitish Kumar Reddy to complete 150 T20I wickets.
He became only the third New Zealand bowler to reach the landmark.
His record-breaking appearance in Hamilton, however, did not bring another wicket. Santner finished his four overs without a breakthrough, conceding 39 runs.
New Zealand Win the Final T20I
The milestone came on a successful day for New Zealand, who defeated India by seven wickets in the fifth T20I.
India posted 191 in their 20 overs. New Zealand chased down the target in 18 overs, with Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips playing important roles in the run chase.
India had already secured the series by winning the first three matches. New Zealand’s victories in the final two games meant India finished the five-match contest with a 3-2 series win.
CricBengal Analysis
Reaching 143 T20I appearances is a significant achievement in a format that demands consistency, adaptability and sustained performance. Santner has remained a key member of New Zealand’s side through more than a decade of international cricket.
His record is not limited to appearances. The combination of 1,117 runs and 151 wickets highlights the all-round contribution he has made to the Black Caps.
