Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh believes Abhishek Sharma has the qualities to become a leader and deserves an opportunity in India’s ODI setup. The young batter’s consistent performances in white-ball cricket have impressed his mentor, who feels it is time for the selectors to consider him for the 50-over format.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Yuvraj praised Abhishek’s approach towards younger players and highlighted his performances as reasons why he should be given an opportunity in ODI cricket.
Yuvraj Impressed by Abhishek’s Leadership Qualities
Yuvraj believes it is too early to make a definitive assessment of Abhishek as a future captain. However, he sees several qualities of a leader in the young cricketer.
He particularly praised the way Abhishek encourages younger players, including Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. According to Yuvraj, the way Abhishek motivates and supports his younger teammates reflects the qualities expected from a senior leader.
Yuvraj also suggested that captaining an IPL team could help Abhishek develop the confidence and experience required to lead India one day. Whether that opportunity comes will depend on how his career progresses.
Yuvraj Wants Abhishek in India’s ODI Squad
Yuvraj also made a strong case for Abhishek’s inclusion in India’s ODI setup. He pointed out that the batter has been performing consistently in white-ball cricket for a considerable period.
He questioned what more Abhishek needs to do to earn an opportunity in the 50-over format. Yuvraj acknowledged that competition for places in the Indian team is intense, with several established players already in the squad.
He added that Abhishek could improve his contributions with the ball and in the field, but stressed that a player needs opportunities to demonstrate those abilities.
Yuvraj believes India should consider giving Abhishek a chance in ODI cricket ahead of the next World Cup.
Abhishek’s Support for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Yuvraj also highlighted Abhishek’s encouraging attitude towards teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
The pair shared a remarkable 133-run opening partnership in just 7.1 overs during the third T20I against New Zealand in Wellington. Abhishek scored a stunning century, while Sooryavanshi contributed 45 from 19 deliveries.
Yuvraj was particularly impressed by the way Abhishek supported the young batter. He also recalled how Abhishek comforted Sooryavanshi after the teenager scored 97 from 29 balls in an IPL Eliminator, despite Abhishek’s own franchise being on the receiving end of that performance.
For Yuvraj, such gestures are encouraging signs of leadership.
How Golf Became Part of Abhishek’s Routine
Yuvraj introduced Abhishek to golf during the Covid pandemic, initially as a way for the young cricketer to unwind from the demands of cricket.
Since then, Abhishek has developed a strong interest in the sport and is often seen playing golf with Yuvraj in Chandigarh and New Delhi. The pair have also played together during trips abroad.
Golf requires concentration, coordination and the ability to recover from mistakes. Some observers believe these skills could complement aspects of Abhishek’s batting, including his swing, timing and power-hitting.
For Yuvraj, however, the priority remains clear: Abhishek should continue performing consistently in white-ball cricket and receive opportunities to prove himself in the ODI format.
