Lionel Messi will remain available for Inter Miami’s upcoming MLS fixture despite receiving his fifth yellow card of the regular season. The Argentine star has avoided an automatic suspension thanks to the league’s little-known Good Behavior Rule.
Messi was booked during Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw against FC Cincinnati on Wednesday. The caution raised concerns that he could miss the team’s next match against the New England Revolution.
However, MLS regulations allow players to reduce their yellow-card accumulation through a period of disciplined conduct.
How Does the Good Behavior Rule Work?
Under MLS rules, a player automatically removes one yellow card from their suspension tally after appearing in five consecutive matches without receiving a yellow card, a red card or supplemental disciplinary action.
The provision is designed to reward players who maintain discipline over a sustained period. Each player can benefit from the incentive a maximum of three times during the regular season.
Messi has already benefited from the rule twice this season. As a result, two of his previous cautions no longer count towards the suspension threshold. Following his latest booking, his active accumulation stands at three yellow cards.
Messi Available for New England Clash
The rule means Messi is eligible to feature when Inter Miami face the New England Revolution. His availability will be important for the club as the regular season approaches its decisive stage.
Inter Miami are also looking to respond after dropping points against Cincinnati. Head coach Cristian González has stressed the need for greater confidence, attacking ambition and improved performances in the remaining fixtures.
