West Indies secured a convincing eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday. The visitors chased down a target of 170 in just 35.1 overs on the fourth day, taking a 1–0 lead in the two-match series.
Bangladesh’s batting struggles in both innings proved costly. After scoring 272 in the first innings and gaining a narrow 27-run lead, the hosts were dismissed for just 142 in their second innings. That left West Indies needing 170 for victory, a target they reached comfortably with eight wickets in hand.
Bangladesh’s First-Innings Lead Failed to Make an Impact
Bangladesh posted 272 in their first innings. West Indies responded with 245, giving the hosts a 27-run advantage.
At that stage, Bangladesh had an opportunity to build a substantial second-innings total and put the visitors under pressure. However, the home side failed to capitalise on the advantage.
West Indies’ bowlers maintained pressure and picked up wickets at regular intervals. Bangladesh slipped to 79 for six before the lower order attempted to extend the lead.
Nayeem Hasan Fights Back with 52
Nayeem Hasan produced the most significant contribution for Bangladesh in the second innings, scoring 52 runs. He remained at the crease while wickets continued to fall at the other end, helping the hosts reach 142.
Jaker Ali added 22, but Bangladesh could not build a substantial partnership to set a more challenging target.
West Indies captain Roston Chase led the bowling effort with five wickets for 36 runs. Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican claimed four wickets in the innings, adding to his first-innings haul.
Warrican finished the match with nine wickets and was named Player of the Match.
Brandon King Leads the Chase
West Indies began their chase positively, with openers Brandon King and John Campbell putting together a 112-run partnership.
Both batters attacked the Bangladesh bowlers, using sweeps and other aggressive strokes to keep the required run rate under control.
Campbell narrowly missed a half-century, falling for 49 to Shoriful Islam. Tagenarine Chanderpaul was dismissed for one by Hasan Mahmud, giving Bangladesh two wickets.
However, those breakthroughs came too late to change the course of the match.
King remained unbeaten on 81 from 115 balls, hitting 10 fours and a six. Kavem Hodge supported him with an unbeaten 31 from 27 deliveries.
The visitors reached 170 for two in 35.1 overs to complete the victory.
West Indies Spinners Make the Difference
The Mirpur surface offered assistance to spin bowling, but West Indies used the conditions more effectively than Bangladesh.
Warrican claimed nine wickets across the two innings, while captain Chase delivered a decisive five-wicket haul in Bangladesh’s second innings.
Bangladesh’s batters struggled to maintain partnerships against the spin attack. The quick loss of wickets in the second innings left the visitors with a manageable target.
Bangladesh Slip to Fifth in World Test Championship Standings
The defeat also affected Bangladesh’s position in the ICC World Test Championship standings. According to the ICC, Bangladesh dropped one place to fifth, with a points percentage of 47.62.
India moved to fourth with a points percentage of 51.52.
Second Test in Sylhet on November 5
Bangladesh will now look to level the series in the second Test, which is scheduled to begin in Sylhet on November 5.
The home side will need a stronger batting performance after struggling in both innings in Mirpur. Building partnerships, handling spin more effectively and avoiding clusters of wickets will be key areas to address before the series finale.
CricBengal Analysis: Bangladesh had a 27-run first-innings lead but could not turn it into a match-winning position. Their second-innings collapse to 142 gave West Indies a target they were able to chase without significant difficulty. West Indies, meanwhile, combined disciplined spin bowling with an aggressive approach in the chase. Bangladesh now face a crucial challenge in Sylhet if they are to avoid losing the series.
