Luis Enrique Warns PSG Players Against Complacency Ahead of Villarreal Clash

CricBengal.com | Sports Desk

Paris Saint-Germain are enjoying an impressive run in the UEFA Champions League, having secured important victories against major opponents including Manchester City and Barcelona. However, head coach Luis Enrique has warned his players against becoming complacent ahead of their next challenge against Villarreal.

PSG will travel to Spain on Tuesday, November 3, for their Matchday 4 league-phase fixture at the Estadio de la Cerámica. Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Enrique stressed that previous victories would count for nothing unless his team maintained its intensity and ambition throughout the match.

‘Past results count for nothing’

Asked about PSG’s recent performances, Enrique made it clear that his players must not assume previous victories will guarantee another positive result.

He explained that winning requires ambition, quality and the determination to work hard for the entire match. PSG must demonstrate those qualities from the opening minutes against Villarreal.

The Spanish coach also emphasised that every Champions League fixture presents a different challenge. Success against top-level opponents in previous matches does not make the next game any easier.

Enrique shows respect for Villarreal

Enrique was careful not to underestimate Villarreal. He praised the quality of the Spanish side and spoke positively about their coach, Iñigo Pérez.

According to the PSG manager, Villarreal want to control possession and play proactive football. That approach could make the contest difficult, particularly if PSG struggle to deal with their opponents’ pressing.

Enrique believes his players must be prepared to respond to that challenge and perform at their highest level.

Villarreal coach Iñigo Pérez, meanwhile, sees the fixture as an important opportunity for his team to measure itself against one of Europe’s leading sides. A positive performance against PSG would provide a valuable test of Villarreal’s progress.

PSG lead the league-phase standings

PSG have made a strong start to the 2026–27 Champions League league phase. They have won all three of their opening matches and sit at the top of the standings with nine points.

Villarreal, by comparison, have collected three points from their first three fixtures, recording one victory and two defeats.

Although the standings favour the French side, the challenge of playing away from home means PSG cannot afford to take the opposition lightly. Maintaining possession, dealing with pressure and making their attacking opportunities count will be important.

CricBengal Analysis: Consistency is PSG’s next test

Beating leading European clubs can strengthen a team’s confidence, but maintaining that level over a long competition is a different challenge.

Enrique’s comments suggest that he wants his players to focus on performance rather than reputation or previous results. His message is particularly relevant in the Champions League, where a single poor performance can complicate a team’s route through the league phase.

Against Villarreal, PSG’s ability to control the game, respond to pressure and remain disciplined could prove decisive.

The French champions have started the campaign strongly, but Enrique wants his players to understand that their next result must be earned on the pitch.
