Jomel Warrican’s Five-Wicket Haul Triggers Bangladesh Collapse as Hosts Bowled Out for 272

Sports Desk | CricBengal.com

West Indies left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican dismantled Bangladesh’s batting line-up on the second morning of the first Test in Mirpur, helping bowl the hosts out for 272 on Thursday, October 29, 2026.

Bangladesh had resumed at 213 for three after a promising first day, but lost their final seven wickets for just 59 runs. Warrican finished with figures of five for 53, recording his fourth five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Shadman Islam Reaches His Third Test Century

Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam began the second day unbeaten on 99. He reached his century with a couple off the second delivery of the morning, completing his third Test hundred.

Shadman looked composed throughout a demanding innings, scoring 105 from 234 deliveries with 11 fours. However, his stay ended when Joshua Bishop trapped him leg before wicket. Bangladesh were 221 at the time of his dismissal.

Towhid Hridoy, who had retired hurt on 42 on the opening day because of muscle discomfort, returned to the crease after Shadman’s departure. He was unable to add to his overnight score and was bowled by Bishop, leaving Bangladesh at 221 for five.

Warrican Breaks Through as Bangladesh Lose Control

Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz attempted to rebuild the innings after the dismissals of Shadman and Hridoy. Their sixth-wicket partnership added 32 runs, briefly offering Bangladesh hope of reaching a more competitive total.

Warrican then broke the stand by bowling Miraz for 15. The dismissal opened the door for West Indies to attack the lower order.

Shamar Joseph removed Nayeem Hasan and Hasan Mahmud, while Warrican returned to dismiss Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam. Bangladesh lost their last five wickets for only 19 runs, bringing the innings to an abrupt end.

Litton remained unbeaten on 34 from 88 balls, but found little support from the other end as the innings closed at 272.

West Indies Bowlers Share the Workload

Warrican’s figures of five for 53 made him the leading wicket-taker in Bangladesh’s first innings. Joshua Bishop and Shamar Joseph contributed two wickets each, keeping pressure on the hosts throughout the morning session.

Shadman was Bangladesh’s highest scorer with 105, followed by Hridoy’s 42 and Litton’s unbeaten 34. Mominul Haque scored 28, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto made 19, and Mehidy added 15.

Bishop also enjoyed a significant personal milestone, claiming two wickets on his Test debut, including the key dismissals of Shadman and Hridoy.

What the Collapse Means for Bangladesh

Bangladesh had put themselves in a strong position at 213 for three on the opening day. The loss of seven wickets for 59 runs, however, prevented the hosts from converting that platform into a substantially larger total.

The responsibility now shifts to Bangladesh’s bowlers, who will need early wickets to prevent West Indies from building a sizeable first-innings lead.

Russell and Venkatesh Speculation Mounts, KKR Armed with Massive ₹64.3 Crore Purse as Optimism Builds

CricBengal Analysis: The key concern for Bangladesh is not simply the final total but the manner in which the innings ended. Shadman’s century and Hridoy’s contribution gave the team a foundation, yet the lower order could not extend the innings. Warrican’s accuracy and ability to exploit the conditions were central to the collapse. Bangladesh’s prospects in the match will depend heavily on how effectively their bowlers respond in the West Indies innings.
